Technology stands out from nature visually but it is not really separate from it. Humans are animals albeit with certain distinctive capacities. The things that we create come from us naturally. In fact our technology has developed in a very similar manner to the way that organisms have developed within nature. Simple tools were used to develop more complex tools, which led to even more complex tools and so on. Organic life developed out of single celled organisms, growing more and more complex, and gaining greater and greater variety. I am impressed by the evolutionary achievements of both nature and technology.
Designing the bracelet Poise I blended technological and natural forms in a celebration of their common beauty. To represent technology I chose simple lathe-turned elements. To represent nature I used the forms of bones. The transition between these elements is seamless, leaving no space for hierarchy to develop between them. Their balance is confident; they are individually recognizable but clearly a single form. The halves of the piece are cast in solid silver, the weight of which heightens their air of confidence.
